According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia, due diligence is the investigation or exercise of care that a reasonable business or person is normally expected to take before entering into an agreement or contract with another party.

Many mistakes and oversights that individuals do in business or in personal dealings with others often stem from the lack of due diligence. For example, our opening text today details the shocking discovery made by Joshua and the children of Israel who had just made a covenant with the Gibeonites under the pretext that they were a people from a faraway land, without properly vetting their claims. It would turn out that the Israelites had been tricked, and they fell for it, because they did not do due diligence or seek counsel like they would usually do (Josh. 9:14).

The lack of due diligence can crash a thriving business overnight, or put an individual into regrettable and compromising positions. Some people fall victim to fraudulent schemes and make ruinous decisions because they overlooked important red flags in their business or personal dealings with others.

Therefore, before making a major purchase, do your research about the product or service, read reviews, and compare prices. If you are getting into a contractual agreement, check the credentials and verify the documents.

Also, when considering an investment opportunity, do due diligence to consider the risks and rewards, and seek the advice of a financial expert if necessary. Do not append your signature to documents you have not fully read and understood. Consider seeking the advice of a legal professional where necessary.

In all, do not get hurried by the lure of profitability, but take necessary steps to ensure that things are exactly as they were portrayed to be. This is how you can minimize risks, protect your interests, and make informed choices about your life, career and business.
